I think it depends on what year/model you have. I replaced mine 2 weeks ago on my my95 wrx import. The car would cut out occasionally, it would restart after some coaxing and I`ve heard of people having idling problems although that wasn`t the case with mine.
Mine is the hot wire type and cost £217 to replace.
Do those symptoms sound familiar?

I replaced mine about 6 weeks ago (UK turbo MY99). Symptoms were very lumpy idling which disappeared if you drove the car very gently for a prolonged period but came back after a good thrashing. I think top end power was down a bit as well.
If your machine is same as mine the good news is that you can get a new sensor for about 60 quid.

I've had my '99 since new, and hadn't noticed any real problems, until fuelling and knock were tested at Scoobysport, where it was discovered that both MAF and lambda were faulty.
I don't have an induction kit, just drive fairly gently; so perhaps they just wear out; and a gradual decrease in performance isn't going to be easily noticeable over a period of time.

hi all thanks for the replies,my car is a wrx 98,was just wondering as the tickover sometimes seems to be hunting like up to 1200rpm then down to 850 then back to normal, dont know if it's down on power because at the mo i'm running it in,but i have a itg panel filter and was wondering if this would speed up the dying process, again any help appreciated, thanks clive.
