No3 cylinder oil temp plug - thread size?
#1
Have been doing searches about the adaptor plug above no3 cylinder and got the said adaptor yesterday from my local subaru garage. Problem is the hole in the adapter seems to be 1/8th bsp (local bolt dealer confirmed this) the sensor on my spa temp gauge is unfortunatly a 1/8th NPT which is tapered and wont fit (it will go in about half a turn then stops) I noticed on various threads that people reckon the oil way on the block is 1/8th NPT as well but the plug I got from subaru (11024AA210)is a lot bigger than that. Are you still awake
Therefore I have two questions:
a) are we talking about the same oil way blanking plug, the one with the allen type hole actually on the block on either side?
b) Can anyone tell me if the 1/8th NPT tapered thread can be re-cut as 1/8th bsp?
Can anyone give me a straight answer before my head explodes I understand most things but this gauge fitting lark is really doing my head in
Edited to say it's a 93 WRX

Have rung scoobymania to find out what they use but they haven't rung me back yet Would an adaptor be ok or does the sensor need to be "in the oil" I suppose the pressure would push the oil up the adaptor. Blimey, you'd never guess I'm an engineer would you Just never seen a "tapered" thread before ie wider at one end than the other

Scoonymania have adaptors that fit 1/8th npt sensors into the block for £8 so looks like I'll get one of these when they have some stock.
Note to self - leave this sort of thing to other people, it's a lot less hassle

taper threads are quite common...
you can buy taper taps...
not sure about die's though..
My Dad's the engineer in our household.. I pick up the odd bit.

charlie,
looking into fitting these myself and also trying to work out what is missing.
the adaptor that you got from subaru,is the part that bolts into the block m18 with 1.5thread? if it is this should work from the site below.
1/8"NPT FEMALE TO M18*1.5 MALE (TIM263)
LMA 067
3.53
my brain is starting to hurt

I have no way of telling if the thread is 1.5 or not I'll have to buy one and see what it's like. Problem is I can only work on the car at weekends and the next few are very busy so don't know if i'll get chance to have another go in the next few weeks. How is yours going?

Charlie,
The female thread in the block above piston number 3 is definitely a M18 fine pitch thread (ie M18x1.5) - this I do know.
Now for the rest of the saga... I, like you, stuffed around for quite some time trying to find out the definite answer as to what was the correct adaptor (more importantly, as I knew the threads I wanted, I wanted to know the threads on the Subaru adaptors). Subaru Australia was (as expected) useless and did not know (I thought I would give them the benefit of the doubt and try them), my mechanics did not know, the Subaru authorised dealers spares departments did not know, the workshop service manual does not mention it...
The only place with some info about the Subaru adaptors was here and Chiarks site. But to add extra confusion to all this was that 2 different part numbers are mentioned for the adaptor:
1. 11024AA111
(mentioned in relation to Defi on Chiarks site)
2. 11024AA210
(mentioned as having the same female thread as used by the oil pressure switch. Someone else then mentioned the oil pressure switch is 1/8NPT and so to is the Defi)
If you search for "11024AA111" on:
http://www.subaruparts.com/
it returns: "11024AA210: Plug Main Gallery"
Which, therefor implies they are identical...
Then it got more confusing. I found a very useful Subaru spares department guy, told him my concerns, and he started to hunt around and found these 2 adaptors plus a few more are shown as adaptors for the oil gallery. But he was not able to tell me the female thread of the parts or whether the 2 part numbers list above are indentical...
At that stage I gave up. I went and got an M18x1.5 bolt, and taped a 1/8NPT thread into it. I, like you, am also an engineer and have access to a fully loaded workshop so this was the simplest solution!!!
If you ever find out the definitive answer about the female threads of the adaptors (are they different and are they 1/8NPT like most people say) it would be nice to know.
No, do not retap a 1/8 BSP to 1/8 NPT. One is 27 threads per inch, the other is 28 threads per inch. Dont quote me on that, Im at home so dont have my references with me but they are very close to one another and you wont be able to reform the thread.
Anyway, thats about the end of it...
