'classic' sti fuel pump

With all the talk of the sti 7 fuel pump being a bit 'lacking'.. whats the fuel pump on the classic sti's like?
Could they be attributed to some of their engine failures too?
Does anyone reccomend an uprated one and would it require a remap?
