Hi all, not jon here, im his brother. As you may know by previous posts by him I knackered his engine last night...Im curious to know of any problems that the wrx engine suffers from?? I was driving down the road at about 80, put my foot down, bit of a funny smell and it conked out, pulled over to the side, tried to start it but it wouldnt turn over. It was like the batt was flat but it wasnt, you could hear the starter trying to turn the engine but it just couldnt manage it. Left it a while, tried to start it, it ran fine but makes a horrible noise, metallic banging and such like, its not the box and the turbo seems ok, ive gotta pull the engine out in the week and was just after any kind of advice as a starting point.
Thanks for any replies
J

Question

Someone must have an idea, im not after a diagnosis, just a starting point, ive heard that the EJ20 engine can suffer from oil starvation leading to knackered bottom end, especially on the cylinder nearest the passenger seat??????

Always difficult to give a diagnosis when you are not there, but it sounds as though it seized up with the difficulty for the starter to turn it over. Could be lack of oil pressure causing big end failure as well as the pistons seizing in the bores. Can be a fault with the oil pressure relief valve failing to maintain oil pressure, though some say it is the metal from the big end failure which causes the relief valve to stick open. It sounds pretty bad though and hope it is repairable when you strip it down.

Good luck anyway.
