Hi all,

I'm looking to get an early WRX but not to sure whether I should go for either an import or UK spec.

Do the Jap spec scoobys have anything over ours?

I would asume that all or most of the parts would be the same for both UK and Jap. Is this true?

the parts are fairly similar and so readily available it doesnt matter anyway. The jap cars are much higher spec, they all have air con, loads have folding mirrors and other toys. Also performance wise theyre a world appart the uk car is slow as **** (my neighbour has a my 97 turbo and a my99 P1) the p1 is a nice car and goes alright, the uk turbo is a joke. The uk turbo has 215bhp standard even the oldest wrxs have 240, one of a similar age to the uk turbo (as they made wrxs before it was out in the uk) will have 260 odd bhp. Then you have the sti models which are the ****, these are jap only too and have more power still, better gearboxes, clutches, intercoolers, engine internals and a load more.

Only advantage i can see to the uk cars is that they are cheaper to insure and some dealerships wont work on imports.

I have an import and it used to anhihilate uk scoobies in standard form. Now its running a load more power and trounces my neighbours p1 too though i wont ever mock that car as its the reason i bought a scooby in the first place.

Value for money, performance and quality wise id go jap if u can afford the insurance hike.

jap spec:

Standard air con
alloy bonnet and sometimes boot lid
alloy wishbones
MY93-94 WRX 240bhp
MY95-97 WRX 256bhp
MY98> WRX & STI 276bhp
Good bucket style seats
Stiffer suspension
Rear window wiper

Most jap parts are the same as uk apart from wishbones/bonnet/boot lid e.t.c

Have a look here:

in my view where i am from which is the caribbiean we import alot of the jap spec cars and the scoob the local company or dealer bring the euro spec ....i myself have a roll on roll off sti7 and i can assure you the jap spec proforms alot better than the euro...in terms of the parts they are the same but the jap ecu seems to be tweked ....the only limit is that the jap spec carry a speed limiter which would only allow you to go up to a max of 112 mph , but this problem is easely rectified

might be stating the obvious but ALL early WRX.s are imports.......
the main diff. between a UK and jap spec car is that the jap cars MUSTY be run on super unleaded MINIMUM (though better with octane boost as well)
