I have 95 STi Version 2 with a bad misfire. Whilst driven normally the car is totally fine, then when I try to accelerate fast it holds back, there is a light comes up the dash (which I think is a cylinder with lines through it) then a pop from the exhaust, then it will accelrate, then do the same all over again, and so on. Also, when the car is on tickover, the same light will come up and the engine revs will rise, only for a few seconds then drop ? One of the coil packs packed up 2 months ago, but that just misfired and gave up, I found the faulty one and changed it, but when that went the Check Engine light came on. I have ordered a manual from Stockcar but I cant wait for it to come this misfire is driving me mad????????????

Sounds more symptomatic of fuelling problem or air/fuel mixture.
As, you say yourself, when the throttle is opened, the engine "hesitates". Might be worth trying a "maf" sensor initially as they are a common fail item.

 

Connect the black under dash connectors and read out the error code (it will be stored in ecu), or go to someone with a select monitor and get them to do it - MAF could indeed cause all the symptoms.

My 96STi did the hesitate / pop / accelerate thing under a heavy right foot.

it turned out to be another faulty coil pack.

the cylinder with lines on it sounds like the 'cat on fire' light, the ECU telling you that theres a problem with it.

I suspect the problem is that its not there~ if you have de-catted.

if you have de-catted, you can disconnect the probe from the loom (the probe is in the horizontal bit of the downpipe under the car). it plugs in to the left of the engine bay, just in front of the air box.
