Question

On normal driving, and medium driving everything is normal.

However, on hard and fast acceleration in all gears , (except first, never do that too much in first BTW), then the clutch pedal fails to return to the normal position. Bit spooky at first, but you can still change gear, by depressing the 2mm of remaining pedal. You have to scoop your foot under the pedal to get it to pop back out !!

Is this a linkage that needs greasing ??
Someone suggested that the clutch fluid is inseffecient to produce enough back pressure ??
Is there a way to check clutch fluid levels ??

How does this happen, and why only on hard acceleration ??

Hi,

I used to have exactly the same problem with my MY00. Once pointed out to my dealer, they replace the clutch master cylinder under warranty and I have had no futher problems, apart from sometimes if I'm sitting in traffic the pedal becomes heavy, but if I take my foot off completely letting the pedal return to the top, it sorts itself out and is fine for a while.

There should be a spring to assist the pedal return. It's under the intercooler. I had this problem and found it was missing.

You can check the clutch resovoir on the rear bulkhead next to the intercooler

Spray the spring with a bit of WD40 type stuff and it'll feel a million times better

hi,

i had exactly the same problem as you and after trying all of the suggestions given above (including replacing the master cylinder and the spring under the intercooler) i still had to return the pedal all the way up with the toe of my boot (after being down tut mines). if your return problem doesnt go away (and im told its pretty common so feel better already) what i did was mount a small angle bracket to the top of the pedal arm (local DIY shop 11 pence)with an 8mm bolt then ran a spring directly upward underneath the dash onto one of the holes, being careful not to snag any wires. its a fiddly, uncomfortable pain in the a** of a job but it works, thank god, after three months of trying everything else. Hey presto, normal clutch. unfortunatley youll probably need extensive back surgery afterwards.

drop me a line if i can help further. good luck and get the deep heat and ibuprofen in now if i were you.

matt.

I had this on MY99 car, they replaced everything including the complete pedal box , and it took them about 4 goes before they fixed it.
