Question

MY02 WRX standard

Travelling home last night following an old golf, not GTi.
Turned onto a country lane that was narrow, but wide enough for two cars to pass. Pulled out but couldn't get past as he was not close enough to the verge. When he realised I was there (muppet) and moved over, I floored it, probably in 1st or 2nd gear still. As I drew alongside my car went very quiet and didn't pull. Changed up and shot off.

Unfortunately it all gets a bit frantic when its dark and wet while overtaking so didn't look at rev counter.

In the 205 you could feel the engine bouncing off the rev limiter as the fuel was cut and then re-introduced giving a distinctive (and probably damaging) ride. The point is that I didn't have this feeling, just an eerie silence

Did I hit the rev limiter?

Could be a long list of things

Similar has happened to me and initially I thought it was the fabled ECU bug (supposedly goes into a safe like limp mode as it thinks it's being emissions tested ) but have still not been able to replicate it. Supposedly happens if you hold 3k revs for a long period of time (which you may have done if waiting to overtake).

Or could have been fuel cut as it sounds like you were higher up the rev range if you thought it might be the limiter which it might well have been.

Wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again

Bottom line is these things have a mind of their own at times

Sure some one with more knowledge may be able to help

Cheers

Edited to say that all of the above is probably bollox as I've just noticed you have a MY02 and the ECU shouldn't be playing tricks on you

Its f#cked take it back and get another,in Silver preferably with some quality mods LOL. You need more power, when you put a decent exhaust on it Golfs will know your coming before you get there and move over like good little boys.

Question

Speak technical to me. How does the rev limiter work? What does it actually do?

I believe the limiter is a so called soft limiter and intially just cuts the spark to one cylinder.

It could be the emissions thing, sit for a second at 4000rpm in 2nd then floor it and bugger all happens, lift off and apply WOT and off she goes, caught me a couple of times on the RB5

Hi, sounds like limiter, did it when i first got the motor.
as for the emission test thing?, is that the same as the ecu
only giving about half boost when held in 2nd 3rd for more than
5 secs,(so ive read, to prevent hubah coming of r/abouts etc?) or is that another thing the ecu can also do/does.

Thanks

Cool

Sounds like a rev limiter. I just found mine an hour ago (about 7400rpm ish). Never got near it before in 6000 miles, but changed the exhaust last night and all of a sudden it appears.
