You can remove the starter motor, and get someone to lock the flywheel ring gear with a big screwdriver or similar blunt instrument.

Or you could leave it in 5th gear...LOL...

(with hand brake on, of course )

Ive never found that to be really effective, as the box just winds up, and can be difficult to get the nut to move. I also know someone who broke 1st gear, trying to undo his crankshaft bolt on an Audi Quattro..
There are other methods too, but I'd say locking the flywheel is the most surefire way of getting it undone ( and tightened again ) with no problems.

or get a long bar and put it on the nut and rest it against the floor and flick the engine over. make sure you get it on the right side of the engine (should go down to the right as you look at the front of it) other wise the bar tends to spin over with the engine and smashes in to something!
then you have to do the bolt up which is the difficult bit coz if you dont get it tight enough they work loose and the pulley starts to chatter on the woodruff key and eventually knackers the pully and crank.
personally i use the special tool from subaru but then i do have the advantage
