Electronic Perfomance Meters - Any good?
#1
Has anyone had first hand experience using the either the AP22 (£160 +vat)
or the DYNO PLUS (£120 incl) Performance meters. I intend ordering one of the
above before I start with performance mods to my 02WRX.
Both of the above allow downloading data to a PC which is a must
Any comments either positive or otherwise would be appreciated

I think most tend to be a bit optimistic!! I have a blitz multi speed turbo timer (measures 0-60 and such) I wish it were right but i reckon a 271bhp my96 uk car would not quite make the 3.9secs dash to 60!!
Great fun playing though!

I have a first generation Dyno plus unit which turned out to be impressively accurate. I tested it against another gps device and there was little difference. Data transfer was ok but not easy. They then brought out a newer model and I got mine upgraded, but it never actually worked again. Until this stage aftersales service was great - but when it stopped working, their service did then fall apart somewhat and I gave up with it.
Just my experience.

I have an AP22 with data logging, and am impressed by it's accuracy and consistency. The accuracy depends on how well you get it set up, but the main thing is, it's repeatable, so you know whether a mod has made an improvement or not.
The BHP calc needs a bit of effort to get the right values etc, but also seems pretty accurate - I should have some figures to compare after my car goes to Well Lane with 200+ club on sunday, but 2 of my mates have AP22s, and have been within a couple of BHP of rolling road figures. You have to input the weight (needs to be measured spot on, not estimated) CD and tilt factor, all these affect the reading. Like I say, once set, it's very good.
Any meter that uses an input from a speed sensor on the car will be no more accurate than a stopwatch and your speedo IMHO, I would only recommend a GPS or G based system.
