Whats fuel cut 94 wrx??
#1
Hi
Anyone know what the fuel cut level is in bar on a 94 wrx?
Put a dawes on last week. When giving the car some stick it cuts out really harshly, I presumed this was the fuel cut point due 2 to much boost. But checked memory of Blitz boost gauge and peak was 0.98bar, pretty sure it shouldn't cut at this level and it cuts when the revs are near the rev limit. Now think it might be coil packs, from reading another thread. Although could be cutting due to excessive boost coz boost seems to keep climbing and might just reach it's peak later in the revs.
I'm confusling meself

Put a dawes on my my93 wrx, fuel cut hits just over one bar, think it must be 15 psi, so what you are getting sound normal.
fitted a HKS fuel cut defence, and now hapilly running 1.2 bar with no problems

Errr...maximum boost near the rev limit?
As far as I am aware cars this age should be making maximum boost around the 4000rpm mark and onwards.
OF course, I am no expert.........
(Hint: IF I am wrong, correct me!)

Boost is dependant on Throttle Position & Load.
Put simply Load is dependant on revs & gearing, so for example in my car -
max boost 16PSI in 5th can be achieved at wot at 3K RPM
max boost 15PSI in 4th can be achieved at wot at 5K RPM
max boost 14.5PSI in 3rd can acheived at approx 6.5K RPM
max boost 14.5PSI in 2nd at 7K RPM
These are approximate - but it gives ya the gist

Thanks for reply's guys.
Gonna get a FCD anyway, anyone selling one?
Turbo_steve, i'm quite sure that the boost (in 3rd) hit about 0.9bar at about 3,500 approx and when I kept my foot down , not looking at boost, it cut out hard somewhere near the end of the revs, when I checked the max boost it read 1 bar so I presumed the boost had climbed. I'll check this as normally with every other turbo car i've had it tails off (cossies, gti-r), did I swear then?
Was wondering if it's the dawes? as there's a spring inside which could be put under pressure slowly moving raising boost? Straws and clutching at

Rich, what other mods have you done to your 93 WRX? do you just have a dawes fitted with stock internals. What fuel are you running? I take it your car is 93 Jap Spec so it is mapped for 100 RON fuel right?

Walshm,
Quite a few mods actually, blitz straight through exhaust, decat downpipe, ss uppipe, ecu has been re-chipped to give 265bhp, have dawes also running 1.2bar, with the fuel cut, also Blitz induction kit.
Next step is larger intercooler, then uprated fuel pump then a re-map, hoping to get 300bhp out of all of these.
Internals are standard, dont think they really need to be changed as the ej20 (closed deck block) is pretty strong anyway

MY 93 with 23 psi in the house. The engine is fine, its the other components that would go first such as clutch and gearbox. Anyway you Reading guys, how come none of you went to the Pod last Sunday? Rich went.

Drive up in what? I have to limp my car to scoobysport before it goes anywhere else. Gearbox is knacked: clutch is gone : windscreen has a hole the size of my head in it!
And bumper is STILL not fixed.
I have a feeling the wheels would fall off if I ran her up the pod! I promised the missus a house by xmas 2003 too! (Yeah...I was drunk). Sob Sob Sob
Soon as it's fixed, I'll race ya! lol
Anyway: What was your 1/4 mile time?

I did crap this time as my gearshifting is too fast hence missing the third gear completely and getting on average 14.1. Beat rich though so I guess I've "redeemed" myself from holding you guys up when I still had my standard Jap gearbox. Anyway, I'm selling my car soon once I've MOTed her.

Dude...you did not have to redeem yourself! Your car was quicker than mine and it showed! You got held up by a monkey in a porsche. It happens to all of us.
You are selling your car? You buying anything good?
Fancy helping me wring some cheap horses out of mine after xmas?

Hehe, tell that to Rich about that Porsche thing. But I was still caning it though and my gearing then was waaaaay too short. Its gonna get worse as the next car I'm getting will have even shorter gerreing.
Anyway, no problem, I'll help you get them horses up. Then you can race Rich in Santa Pod and annoy him like mad.

You would not belive how closely I am following the DIY ECU thread
Car should have a nice spangly helix clutch in it soon!
Gearbox is being re-built...anything I need to ask for to make it nice and strong, as this is second rebuild in 20,000miles?
Does a Quickshift reduce strain on shifting forks?
Presumably my nice long (UK Legacy Turbo) gear ratios put less strain on the clutch etc, even if my acceleration is a little "dull" compared to certain 21psi (or is that 21 Bar, katana? ;-) )red imprezas among us!
Can't wait to get my car mended............

Steve, quickshifts makes it worse by the way, especially if you change gears as fast as I do and completely miss a certain gear consistantly. I have an AP paddle clucth in mine and it is really harsh. It just grips and can be a pain in traffic if you're not used to it. Oh, and its 23 psi now and still running rich. I'm beginning to suspect that my AFR is faulty (joke).
Ohh Jonny, I think its a good time to consider one of them carbon fibre bonnet. I think someone offered to make one here a few months back. I wanted to get one but it was waaaay over my price range.

Okay...I guess I'll just stick to having a 15cm (!!!) thow between 1st and second and try and learn to be a bit more gentle with my gearbox.
Katana, when you changed your gearbox did you have to change your rear diff or are they the same?
23psi on a standard ECU? Running rich? I am starting to see why my fuel economy is so high. You SURE you have standard ijectors, and not those out of an F-18 lol

So..any other suggestions for cheap ways to make a legacyt go fast?
I am not a fan of the Dawes device idea ( I like to do things electronically, don'tcher know) but I am aware that ECU OR Dawes both work as well as each other with different benefits.
It seems the ol "closed deck block" can take a pounding, and as the bottom end is now WRX spec, I am hoping we can get me between 250 / 300bhp mark?

hiya everyone ive got similar prob, my 93wrx throws me back wen foots fully to the floor,it also throws the boost bak (got boost guage to tell)i was also thinking coil packs but thats an expensive job! can u fit just a fuel cut defence without all the other stuff? how much, any ideas please elp cos its really annoying ! thanx !

Tim ,what boost do you hit when the fuel cut hits in, also at what revs does the fuel cut hit ???
You can an HKS fuel cut for about 110, or alternatively a dawes fuel cut lifter for a lot cheaper, but I am not too sure how well the dawes one works

the revs arnt peaking but the boost will hit 1bar or just below,it feels like overboost (had that in my old fezzy rs turbo) but it shouldbt be cos its standard, just hks filter and baileys d.valve.its only wen foot is fully 2floor. but the boost does shoot back wen it jumps down to bout 5-6psi.im completly baffled, took it to a specialist,he said he wasnt sure and wanted it for a few days!

Mine was doing that pretty badly at one point (just after I had bottom end rebuilt). It turned out I had a leak in one of the actuator hoses.
Check the actuator hoses for leaks, especially the little barb on the bottom of the resonator (cos mine had gone brittle).
Also, you may want to try cleaning your boost solenoid.
All nice simple stuff you can do on a saturday morning.

Hey guys,
If ya got a pre MY97 (See the diy ECU thread) - I can help you lift ya rev limit etc
Mind you if ya gearbox don't go it'll probably by ya con rods or ya clutch.
OK - so maybe 250 lfbs/ft torque on a std MY96 Clucth was asking just a bit too much with 8xK Miles on the clock
Keep me posted = I'll be back = for my 2nd ever *complete* run down da Pod
