You'll find another dip stick underneath the intercooler for the gearbox oil. See link below. Castrol Syntrac does get a good name for gearbox and diff oil.

DIY gearbox oil

I forgot to add - these DIY pages are from a US impreza, but virtually identical to the UK & Jap spec.

Hi all,

Coming up for my next service 60 months done 41k miles only interval service. Full Service including Cam belt done at 36 months, done 15k since then.

Whats going to be involved ?

My brother owns a couple of garages so I can the parts trade what will I need ? Do they mind people doing this ?
What front pads, oil can anyone recomend my97. Also I have heard Castrol Synthtrack is they way to go for gearbox oil, how do I change, I read you pour it into the dipstick that doesn't sound right as I thought that would be engine oil ?

Loadsaquestions sorry, I guess I should get the pads and gearbox oil done before I go to the garage and save meself a few quid ?
