engine check light

hiya

i have a 94 WRX and the check engine light comes on the dash very ocasionally maybe once every 3 weeks for 10 or 15 seconds
does anyone know what this means it still runs fine even when on

If I were you, I'd do an ECU reset 1st. If it continues get your car plugged into a select monitor for diagnostics.

i have a 94 wrx and had the same problem took it to PE and found it was only water temp sensor had that done reset ecu all fine now

Sorry, but resetting the ecu is a bad idea! You get the CEL for a reason - first thing you should do is find out why

Maybe you're getting a MAF failure CEL - this is causing your car to det due to lean mixture, and the ecu is retarding the ignition to protect engine. You've just reset ecu - ecu is no longer retarding...and you get det again. This is a bit extreme, but it can happen. If you're car seems more powerful following the reset, I'd be worried

You can join the black under-dash (by steering column) connectors and the ecu will flash the stored error codes at you in long-short sequences. Do a search - there's lots of info here.
