I have an import sti v5 with a poxy bolt on fog light under the rear bumper. I say a guy yesterday who has converted the right reversing light of his import into a fog list using a brighter bulb and a red peice of gel from a stage lighting lamp.

Is this legal or do I have to keep the one I've got for the MOT?
I don't want to change the rear cluster as it is the clear lense version.

Cool

Sorry to barge in, but I have the same question, and don't like the bolt on rear fog light. I am sure i have also heard that someone converted their reversing light into a fog light. I also own a Focus and that has one fog light and one reverseing light. Please help us people.

Andy

I have also cut an extra bulb holder into the O/S rear cluster.

Ian

Apparently no wattage is specified in the regulations.

"Thank you for your email enquiry dated 7th March 2000.

According the "The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989" an obligatory rear fog lamp must be fitted on the centre line or off side of the rear of the vehicle. In the case of a rear fog lamp which shares a common lamp body with a stop lamp there must be a minimum separation distance of 100mm and must be a minimum distance of 250mm above the ground and a maximum distance of 1000mm above the ground. It must be red in colour, but there
are no specifications concerning the wattage or intensity.

I hope this information will assist you but further information can be obtained from the above mentioned Regulations.

Nah, tail is about 5 or 10W and the fog and brakes are 21W as MD said.

Thanks for everyones help.
I was in Halford yeaterday and the bulb that is used for a reversing light is the same as a fog light, both 21W so am going to re-wire the switches and put in the red gel.

Thanks again to everyone who wrote.

OK...After a certain year (1982????) we in the UK have to have at least ONE rear fog light, if the car is used in the UK it has to have the ONE fog on the 'off side'.

If you have a pair you must have them this far from the ground etc etc.

So, yes one light is legal so long as its on the o/s, and the n/s can be a reversing light.

I cut an extra 21watt bulb holder into my o/s rear cluster to produce a fog...works very well and I keep TWO reversing lights

Edit...or mounted centrally but not one lamp on n/s...if that makes sense ?
