Question

I mean, is it obvious? Is it loud?

Is it potentially dangerous, with stray metal flying about?

Are there any things you should/shouldn't do if it does happen?

Depends on the amount of the bang.

no scooby incidents I have done include a piston leaving the conrod, then going thru the side of the block & denting the inner wing, another time I have had a piston jame in the bore, the conrod has torn out of the bottom of the piston & then whacked about inside the engine, I have had a timeing chain break & pistons & valves had a mating session and other odds & sods including a rebore where the bores we perfectly round but not horizental, this made a mess & split the block, all of my problems have been accompanied with a loud noise, only time I got a bit worries was when I shattered a clutch & the flywheel smashed it way out & dented the gearbox tunnel by my feet.

good to meet you the other day.

Barge, either you are very unlucky, very abusive, or you exaggerate, and subarus dont have a timing chain.
I think you would be safer ( and richer ) riding a bicycle

ustolemyturbostevename.

as I said none scooby incidents, also the cars I have had problems with have all been mine, have all been tuned to within an inch or their life & raced, I have had numerous engines/cars rebuilt due the them having different problems, yes I'm unlucky, yes I give my race cars a good thrashing, but they are race cars & you drive race cars hard, my scooby has not been tracked rallied or abused as its my road car, the only thing replaced on this was the clutch at about 45000 miles, nothing else, longest engine life, well my ford granada has done about 120 000, again cos I look after it, also having had a driving licence for 19 years I have had quite a few cars in this time over 35 at the last count & does it realy matter what I do to my cars ?

Bike riding is not for me, I still have the scars on my shoulder from a bike accident when I was a kid.

Telboy asked the question, I gave my experiences.

edits to remove some of the ranting
