I'm looking at at a 1997 sti II ra spec in the next few days,
i am famimiar with the spec of the uk cars.
what are the differences in sti I , II , III and RA.
what should i look out for
thanks in anticipation....

STi version 2 would be MY96 which was built between Oct 1995 and Sept 1996. A 1997 RA would either have been MY97 (version 3) or MY98 (version 4) and both would have been facelift models.
See the FAQ reference above or http://www.iwoc.co.uk/jpimp4.html for the model designation to confirm exactly which type it is. Check the plate on the passenger side suspension pillar and the bit which says APPLIED MODEL not the VIN.
