I have always tried to use Optimax. I do a lot of long trips and try to avoid filling up when I've still got more than a gallon or so left (I just hate petrol stations!).

The trouble is, I keep getting cought out as so many petrol stations do not have super unleaded. I know I'll get less power from 95RON but does it cause any damage to the engine ?

Depends on what car you have. What car do you have?
