Obviously it should be completely dry on the outside, but with the engine lying flat the way they do, oil willl gather on the inside, and does have potential for leaks. the rubber washers under the bolts to compress with age, and I would reccommend replacing them, more so than the gaskets. I would also make sure any surfaces were clean, and put sealer before fitting new bungs and/or gaskets. The hopefully give the sealer enough time to dry before allowing any oil near it. Only way when in the car, is to jack one side up, so the oil will flow away from the area you are working.

Thanks Stevie. The oil level does not appear to be dropping - we did clean and seal it, more a "trauma" issue than age since the car is under 2 years old? I don't know if we cleaned all the outside after it leaked everywhere - have cleaned now and will see how it goes.
