Question

Please can anyone tell me if there is a significant difference in gearing between '93 import and '99 UK turbo?

I might be buying a '93 for the wife, but I wouldnt want her to 'suffer' driving to and fro work with high revs (and noise) on the motorway bit.

Thanks in advance.

So what is a '99 doing at 70mph?

I cant remember what it does revs wise (sorry) but its so fast I have to watch the road

Seriously, is it much lower geared?

Very mate. When I was cruising with Rich and Steve, they were only putting along at 3500 rpm. I on the other hand, was struggling to keep up with them at 5000 rpm. You can guess what speed I was doing..

Are you saying that at 3500rpm in a uk is 5000rpm in a wrx '93?

Or am I just a little dim ?

Basically yeah. And they wonder why I couldn't keep up. Especially since I was running on fumes that day at the end of our journey.

But then again, it could be because these guys were cruising at 120 mph!

I'd like to keep my license. You won't believe how many times my radar detector went mad on that day. Add to the fact that the stupid 911 boxed me in, yada yada, excuse, excuses...

4000rpm in top is about 90 mph about 10 mph less than a uk car , so not that much lower unless you go for the RA version .
Hope that helps Dave

Not being funny, but my 93WRX does 4500rpm at 90mph ! Roughly 3500 at 70mph ...pulls quicker and harder than a UK model of course at that speed...crazy for overtaking people doing 70mph !

Yeah, there are 'two sets' of ratios for that year on wrx, I have been reading up.

That doesnt include RA etc.

Spence, you are correctish. Do you think our engines can keep a constant velocity of 130 mph? Not to mention the 911 and my radar detector going off ain't it ChrisD...

edit ~ dad, the gearing is worse on an RA btw...

Correctish?? Which bit?!!

Well 130 ish is around 6500rpm so although I'd probably say yes I reckon 93wrx engines on 98ron could cope, I wouldn't want to do it having heard the rumours about poeple on autobahns who drive on the red line for a while and get engine go bye bye problems.. ! !

6500 is a bit close to bone for me although I;ve wound it round to 7000rpm (140mph ish) a couple of times for a short time though. Wouldn't cruise at 130 myself though I'm sure it'd handle it cos it isn't quite cruising at 7000. I think real damage is cruising at 7000rpm !

Who knows though. I wouldn't risk it for very long though I know that! The beast is too damn good to risk

Well, 70 for me is 3300 whereas yours is 3500. Maybe our speedos are not accurate. Anyway, please tell this to TurboSteve, Rich a and Chris_D on why I couldn't keep up with them on that day. We're in the same boat...

Hmm, the only way for me to redeem myself is to get a 12s time in Santa Pod right?
