Race Version Dawes Is It Worth It?
#2
Possibly. I don't think you'll find anyone that has both to compare them...
I have the 'race' version sitting in a bubble-wrap bag if you're after one (haven't used it since I got the engine 'Tekked'). Mail me if you're interested

I just wondered what effect it would make in the real world they are advertised as spinning up .3 secs quicker. I just thought .3 quicker spool up hmm doesnt seem worth it. But on the otherhand it could well be.

I know I don't offer the most biased free opinion, but I have compared the two and the difference is significant. The fact s the turbo spools up around 500rpm quicker

I have to ask. How does the turbo spool up 500RPM quicker?
Until the spring tension in the Dawes is overcome it remains shut, so if it's been setup to open at 1bar then that's what it will do.
How does the design differ to achieve an earlier spool up?

I have found the that the turbo spools up much quicker with the dawes fitted than without it- and comes on boost much sooner- probably about 500rpm sooner, in fact!

I was wondering the same thing as well, re: spool-up. Spool-up is entirely dependant on things upstream of the turbo (well, and itself )- wastegate, up-pipe, manifold, engine. I can see how the 'lighter internals' etc. could well mean faster reaction times, i.e. wastegate responds more quickly, but not spool-up. So the 'race version' may have better boost control (less likely to have 'peak problems') but that's about it.

Conceivably the lighter ball and spring could mean that it spikes less but otherwise I am with Harry Boy. An MBC/EBC/ECU if setup properly will all get about the same boost at the same point if the fuelling and timing are the same.

I agree with Harry Boy, i cant quite see how it makes a difference, especially a £15 difference, I must be really tight with my money

I can't see it being possible. My car with the dawes spooled up to full boost by around 2.5k revs. I cannot imagine (and I know someone that had a race spec) that this could bring it down further than the normal version by 500rpm to 2k revs full boost. I don't think its possible with the turbos we use????
BTW - guy with the race spec and mine spooled up roughly around the same rpm...........

Scoobyjawa,
my post suggested that i had boost approx 500rpm lower with dawes than without it- not to the difference between standard and race spec dawes- i only have experience of the race spec unit.
i believe the original question was 'race version dawes is it worth it' to which my answer is yes

Jamie,
I currently don't get 1 bar until 3.4k with a standard Dawes - if you offer a money back guarantee on the Race version reducing this to 2k9, I'll have 5, lol!
