Default Connect OBD2 reader direct to ECU?

Hi I have a 99-00 Sti 6 RA ECU I want to connect an OBD2 reader to. Can this be done directly to the ECU without using the obd port under the dash? I have a 3 plug ecu, greyx2 and bluex1. In my head I thought could use the blue plug port but I'm not sure if misunderstood what I was told some years back!
Many thanks, Al

That 1st link is really helpful Stig. 👍 Also, interesting to see that old urban myth re disconnecting the battery for 30 mins resets the ECU is proved wrong.

Thanks for the replies, unfortunately it doesn't help solve my problem. The car was deffo OBD2 but I no longer have the OBD2 port to plug into. Is there a way of connecting directly to the ECU? Many thanks.😊👍

I run my PSI3 device without using the OBD port, that gives me a lot of data.

The wires have to be there just look for them and hardwire it in or fit a new connector.

The wires may or may not be there the wiring loom has been cut down significantly and not by myself. I wouldn't have a clue which wires go to what OBD pin anyway, just finding a basic wiring diagram for his car was a task in itself! lol

The ECU pinout images (99-00 UK/Euro Turbo models) below may or may not be useful to you. (they've already been posted on here before)
The attached engine wiring diagrams are for a LHD MY00 Turbo Impreza (some intermediate connectors may be in different positions due to LHD layout) but give the connections for the data link connector (B40)
Have also attached the P1 model supplement as it includes ECU pinouts and other information that pertain to the Revision "G" JDM model it's based upon.
Out of interest it includes a list of the 2 digit DTC codes which suggests that it wasn't OBD compliant although like other UK models of that vintage used an OBD connector for data collection purposes using SSM.

Agreed but you can get a remarkable amount of info/data out of the V5/6 cars.
