Default Fuel tank

I have been having a warm start issue for a while now where the car turns over a lot when the car has been stood for 1-2 hours, starts perfect when cold or when hot (within 30 mins)

I have had the injectors cleaned resealed and tested, checked the coolant temp, changed spark plugs and pressure tested the fuel system,

The next thing was to replace the fuel pump and filter, so when my mechanic took the pump out it was covered in rust and he said my tank is covered in rust on the inside and that I should try find a replacement, my car is a 1998 wrx sti, would a tank from a newer car fit or would a UK classic tank fit?

I can only presume the corrosion in the tank is from the car being sat when it was in Japan as its only done 50,000 miles.

Thanks for advance for your help

Just fitted a 2006 SpecD fuel tank into my 2000 GC8 Impreza.
Swapped all the pipework/pump/accessories over from original tank. And used original straps etc.
Haven’t started the car yet, but all seemed to fit without any issues.

Not a fun job, but hope this helps. Best of luck.

That's a question I have wondered does your tank rust more when stored empty because of the vapour ? I heard if you store the car with a full tank for say half a year the petrol can loose some of the octane percentage but least it won't rust as bad , could be wrong tho when I left my bugeye off the road in a garage for ten years took the pump out and it was mega rusty the inside of the tank was the same petrol had turned absolutely stank , luckily got a JDM tank it looked brand new even tho it was out the same year of car 2nd hand

Is the rust in the tank a major thing that I need to get sorted ASAP? I obviously need to put a new fuel pump in as that was covered in rust aswell,

How many hours in labour do you think it will be to replace? Im not mechanically minded so I wouldn't be doing the work 😂

Thats the UK2000. I think the tanks are the same for the classics. Non turbos have a smaller tank.
