Default Head gasket Failure.. options

Just brought my98 terzo back from Spain after it being there 20 years .. noticed coolant in the boot and the fan stuck on permanent so instantly rang alarm bells Also developed a cold start issue like it was starved of fuel only when cold fires up ok when warm .. the guy said iac valve but I知 thinking there is more into this anyway I topped water up and had a drive around .. done about 30 miles .. After some spirited driving big cloud of white smoke car cut out .. was then lazy to start and when started had a misfire .. plums of white smoke still coming out so I limped it home and turned it off .. I知 pretty sure this is a hg failure.. ?? Plan was to do an engine rebuild but not this soon 🤦‍♂️.. my question is what痴 my options regarding rebuild or recommendations on upgrades etc I知 not interested in going all out forged just a standard rebuild but maybe some improvements components ..any suggestions? Also best place to source all the parts I値l need as I値l be doing this myself .. wanted to keep the original engine
thanks in advance

I know you said white smoke but what is your turbo condition and did the car over heat.

Check your PCV and see if its stuck, if it is then it has taken your turbo out by the sounds of things.

Cheapest option would be to buy a secondhand engine for around 800-1000 and fit it then forge it when your ready surely? A rebuilds gonna take you half way to the forged cost if not more.

I'd check pcv and turbo first and that all bolts around the inlet manifold are tight, had a misfire on mine when I changed my engine, turned out I'd not sealed the manifold properly the day before and forgot to finish before I started her up

Just to check it is hg, buy a sniff test kit, 」20 approx, or ask a garage to check it for you. Are you aware of 'Subaru coolant conditioner' which is supposed to prevent hg failure on high mileage engines?.... There's plenty of info on youtube.... but turns out its good old Holts Radweld! Worth a punt....?
