Just left the car in to have the PPP fitted and ended up having a bit of a cafuffle with the engineer (isn't he a mechanic?).

He kept saying it takes 2 days to fit. I told him I could fit it myself in a few hours at home and he said that the fitting of the bits is easy. Apparently it's the setting up of the new ECU that's the long part. They are saying that they take the original ECU and modify it and have to set it up???? I was under the impression that the ECU was replaced with a new one from Prodrive.

Is this right or are they ripping the p*ss?

Thumbs down

Sounds like I'm wrong as your car is an MY01, edited to avoid confusion!

For MY99 in Holland is a two hour action:

- Swap ECU's
- Fit supplied exhaust midsection and backbox

If we are talking about MY01

Then there are 3 points

1. The ECU used is upgraded by Prodrive so they are swapped

2. I actually waited for mine to be done ( 3 Hours )

3. It is done at the dealers NOT Prodrive

if we are talking pre MY01 then disregard this post

Cool

I've "heard" of the ECU swop being done in a car park

Seriosuly, if it is MY98-00, it is a matter of swopping pieces over & shouldn't take more than an hour really. I got charged £35

You then have to let the ECU "see" all the gears, ie drive around as normal & change from 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 Simple

Might be something with a MY97 ECU but can't remember.

Hey Puff - how was the holiday? Thanks again for the braces - fitted now, and they tighten things up nicely

Back on topic - my01> PPP doesn't replace ecu, but modify the MAP input and raise boost...if I recall correctly (certainly they don't change fuelling/timing maps). This is probably done with an add-on board...hence the delay.

It is indeed a MY01 and the work is done. Funny how 2 days turned into 4 hours when I said he was a lazy bast*rd and that I could do the work myself with the tools I have in my shed

Sounds nice. Very big improvement in push around mid-way through the revs. Not big improvement before 3000rpm where I was hoping for it but can't have everything. DP might sort that for me.

Thanks all for the info.
P.S.
Took a quick look under the bonnet and couldn't spot the ECU. Where does it live?

ECU is located in the passenger footwell, under the carpet is a metal plate it is under that. Externally it looks the same as a standard ECU.

Thanks.
Drove it last night a good amount and there's something amiss. I'm going to post it seperately but I'll add it here too. About 90% of teh time it runs like a bag of sh*t. It's like theres a miss or hesitation coming in and out and the power is way down. The other 10% it's completely smooth and way faster than before.
Anyone have this problem?
I also can't spot the other bit of exhaust that's supposed to be changed in addition to the tailpipes.

SoreHead

There is not much to spot when you look for the replaced 3rd cat - it is just a plain pipe with the original heat shields refitted.

Hope you get the other problem sorted - is it a dodgy connection with the extra board in the ECU?

Duncan

Edited to add - in the UK the ECU is swapped for one that has had the extra board added by Prodrive, but when the kit is exported "abroad" (including the EU) the extra board is sent for fitting by the garage. I guess that is down to the difficulties of doing exchange with a valuable unit without the garuantee of return provided by Subaru UK.
