Default EJ22 with 2.0l heads? Identification and help...

Hi all,

Right - quick introduction I have a '73 VW T2 Bay bus with a subaru conversion. It ran ok ish, then due to flood damage had to be rebuilt (on the cheap) and it ran ok ish after, with a bit of hunting on idle, but made good power. I thought it was a NA EJ20 from a Mk2 Legacy...

Its currently out of bus as part of the restoration and we are trying to sort it and the loom out and further investigation shows its an EJ22 block, however its been suggested that it might have 2.0l (EJ20) heads on it. They are the ridged / finned type with '16 Valve' cast in to them (see photo). Is there any way to determine which they are? If so is this a good idea? Or should I try and track down some 2.2L heads?

If it is EJ22 with EJ20 heads is there any

for compression ratios etc, anything else to watch out for to make it run right and should I be using the stock ECU I have - which I assume is from the EJ22?

Also are all EJ22 blocks closed deck or did they also do an open or semi open version?

Trying to get a handle on whether its renovating this engine or starting again with a fresh unmolested EJ20 build.

Thanks in advance for the help, to be honest I don't know a huge amount about scooby engines!

The rocker cover pictured was used on a variety of SOHC engines/vehicles
97/98 forester 2.0L
97/98 Impreza 1.6L /1.8L / 2.0L
94-97 Legacy 1.8L /2.0L / 2.2L

On a further check of part numbers the same heads are used on both the EJ20E and EJ22E B11 Legacy engine.

This should be of some use.

They look like early EJ22 heads. See here:

Thanks for the links, I’m still not sure if they are 2.2l heads or if there is any real difference between them and 2.0l heads (I’m really not a mechanic...)

I’m guessing that it’s probably worth trying to sort out? If I buy a second hand NA EJ20 then that will probably want a full rebuild and at least the current block was rebuilt a couple of thousand miles ago (apparently).

Is the NA 2.2 / EJ22 a desirable engine or is an EJ20 a better bet?

Thanks

So it looks like a 95-98 ish Phase 1.5 EJ22E with earlier heads on it.

I can only only find Info on Phase 1 vs Phase 2 which suggests that the P1 are single exhaust port and the P2 are dual exhaust port. Is this going to cause any issues? I assume all the sensors and such like should be the ones for the age of the block not the heads?

Im assuming that I should use the loom for the 95-98 model block and use my current ECU?

My current loom looks like it was put together by a colour blind toddler so I’m going to start again with a fresh main VW loom and a new or good quality s/h Subaru loom and get someone who knows what they are doing to build the loom. (I.e not me).

Right so update.

The engine code on the block is EJ22MUB which googling suggests is 1996-98.

The heads are earlier 89-95(?) SOHC heads.

I don’t know whether the Intake manifold is earlier or later...

From what I understand the early heads should work with the later block, not sure what the craic with the intake however?

Cheers
