Default Intercooler Pipework Diameter

Hello folks,

I wondered what the optimum pipework diameter would be for my build.

Car is a Type R, running a standard location AET GT3071R turbo. Mapping of the car was held back due to inlet temps so I am changing the IC to a universal mishimoto one. it has 3” inlet & outlet connections.

I am having custom IC pipework made up. My current IC pipework is 2.5” diameter at its largest.

What are the limitations of keeping the pipework 2.5” or is upsizing to 3” worth it?

Cheers
Rich

I had 421 hp in a Saab 900 turbo with 2" piping using a GT2871R and E85 so 3" is way too big IMO.

Yeah I’m starting to think that 3” is overkill for what I need

The Mishimoto FMIC kit for the Impreza has 2.5" hot side and 3" cold side (matches the throttle body).

Yeah, I read that in your OP - you should still be able to run 3" cold side back up to the TB and then run 2.5" down to the hot side and use a silicon reducer (or should that be an increaser!)?

Nothing quite as satisfying as building your own stuff though
