Regeneration of STI struts
I have bought a full set of second hand STI WR1 struts. I would like to regrease them before putting them into my car and I am also thinking about powder coating both struts and springs. I need a piece of advice.
- I would like to put new bottom nuts, do you know what is their thread?
- I have been told that to have them powder coated, I need to remove all rubber elements. I think that only rubber thing in them are simmerings (or round gaskets) in the top of strut body. Am I right? If yes, can I unmount them and reuse them? Or can I buy them new anywhere?

There is an internal rubber O-ring, held between the internal metal bushes.
The internal bushes are normally worn out, on one side (due to the arc of operation), so re-greasing is something that should be done before the wear occurs.
The best grease is Fuchs urethyn xhd2.

It looks quite complicated.. At the moment I see powder coting too risky (very easy to ruin them), so I will probably abandon that idea. I will just regrease them and maybe powder coat springs only..
Do you know the exact type(thread) of nuts used in the bottom of the struts?

Also, I have no access to the grease you mentioned. Can you recommend anything else that is more popular (I ve been told that this is very specialistic grease)? What kind of grease should it be, lithium type with synthetic base?

All of the greases that you recommend are based Polyurea thickener. As I read tech specifications, the main difference between them and those based on Lithium thickener is high temperature resistance. But is it a problem in case of shock absorbers? Do they work in temperatures higher than 150 Celcius degrees (Urethyn XHD: -40 / +180°C)? I think that the grease should rather have its best characteristic in ambient temperatures let's say -40 / +80°C).

Mobil SHC Polyrex 221 460
40ºC, mm2/s 220 460
which is better for our shocks?

Another question to those who changed grease in their inverted struts: What did you use to wash out old grease from inside of the struts? Let's say 80% can be cleaned mechanically with some tool (any idea what to use?), but after that there will still be some dirty grease inside (I assume black dirt is from wear). Can I use some solvent? Or can I use high pressure hot water? Wich option is safer for internals, especially all rubber gaskets inside?
