I have a 2004 54 plate impreza wrx and was wondering whats involved in swapping the engine and 5 speed gearbox for an sti engine and 6 speed gearbox.

this. although he hasnt explained why :P

basically for the money you will spend turning a wrx into an sti you will actually spend less if you just buy an sti in the first place.

The 'just buy an STI' response is fine for a saloon, but for a wagon you don't have much choice, given how rare the JDM STI wagons are...

The OP didn't say he had a wagon, but it might be an excuse.
