Default 97 auto immoblizer/key hassle

gc8, 97, auto, recently bought without key, just had the auto elec come check out the wiring and he noticed theres no immobilizer box, so my questions, does the immobilizer box only work with the same ecu? can i just buy a new immobilizer box and key, or do i need new ecu aswell, and can i flash a manual ecu to work with an auto?

Yes It will. I have tried about 4 different ecu's on my own Impreza. Only one worked, other 3 were not recognised. Although Subaru will code it to your ecu for £45. But you can buy all the bits you need from a breakers hope that helps.

If you have the auto ecu, I'd buy a key and immobiliser off a breakers. Then pay Subaru £45 to code it to your ecu. Another option which is more pricey is buy esl daughter board. Andy can disable the immobiliser on the ecu. But it's not cheap at £390. But does mean your car then can be remapped. This is if you have a turbo Impreza, if it's non turbo then this is not an option.
