Default Oil Cooler or Heater??

Here is a question for all you clever Scooby people!

I retired on Stage 1 of the Nicky Grist Stages on Saturday due to overheating caused by water loss from a split in a small hose. The hose is part of the system that circulates water around the oil filter housing.

My question is does the system circulate water around the filter to warm up the oil in cold weather, cool the oil when hot, or both?

I would prefer to blank both ends and remove the water pipes completely to avoid any likelihood of a recurrence.

Opinions appreciated!

Subaru refer to it as an oil cooler.

Its an area that suffers high temps, they go brittle very quickly, you will be better on a rally car running an external oil cooler & removing the modine & blanking the block & water pump connections.
