Default Oil advice

im just after a bit of oil advice, I did a quick search and couldn't find a definitive answer.

My my car is a completely stock 2006 uk spec sti (2.5) with 79k miles and good history.

Which oil oil would you recommend? The previous owner was using shell ultra helix 5w40, should I just keep using this? I'm led to believe this is the Subaru recommended oil?

also, just out of curiousity, how much oil would be needed roughly to take oil level on the dipstick from min to max? About 1 litre? And how often should it need topping up? Obviously I will check it at least weekly, but it would to nice to have a rough idea of what normal oil consumption is for these cars as I'm new to the 2.5.

How often would people reccomend doing a full oil change?

Any and all oil advice for my car welcome.

Thanks, Dave.

I was looking for the same info a while back, my book says 5w30 fully synthetic but most online recommendations are for 5w40. Then i found info saying main dealers were using the shell helix ultra 5w40 so thats what ive topped up with.
My 2.5wrx was serviced in october last year and has done 4k since and it's used almost a litre of oil.

Hi

A 5w-40 is fine for that, no need to worry about matching the brands for a top up, they all mix fine.

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT+, Motul Sport/300V, Red Line and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XF Longlife, Castrol Edge/Magnatec, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Keep an eye on the oil level with the 2.5, they can burn a lot. If that is the case, it can be worth changing to a 10w-50.

Cheers

Tim
