Gearbox rattle!!!!
After a spirited boosting in third there is a nasty rattle coming from the gearbox...
It's really bad in third but is faintly present in second and forth, it climbs with revs and is lesser on decel but still there, also there a bit with the clutch in or out of gear.I've dropped the oil and it was a little low but nothing to be seen in it...Any help appreciated.

Yeah I did think that and fully expected to see something in the oil... maybe bearings gone?
By the time I either strip it down or get somebody else to do it, then buy all the parts it may need I'm just wondering if I'd be better off going with a six speed?

it will be the 3rd/4th combined gear thats stripped, common problem on the 5 speed.
Not worth the money to fix, find a replacemen box or go 6 speed bt then again thats £1500 plus !

Thanks for your replies... I've just got back from a local impreza specialist who has said it's a bearing issue on the main shaft. It is fixable he said but will cost around £600 all in does this sound reasonable?
With my intended future power and torque increases, I asked him if he thought I should go with the stronger 6 speed box? he said he's worked in rallying and rallycross for years and has seen many gc8's on standard 5 speeds with around 400bhp and they're fine...
I was under the impression that anywhere upwards of 320bhp and similar torque that it's just a matter of time before the box goes pop?

While it's being fixed you could stick on some re-inforcing plates?

I'd love to keep the 5 speed box as it's significantly lighter than the 6 speed, I love the ratios of my RA box plus it's keeping the cars originality.

I'm sure the myth was busted on these blast plates,or maybe it wast just an ongoing argument about them being a waste of money?
There's a thread somewhere, last year I think and some discussion through FB?
Seem to remember Andy Forrest being mentioned
I might be totally wrong tho and dreamt the whole thing lol

I'll have a look into them gearsets but like you say it looks like the expensive route, especially by the time it's built up with all new bearings etc....
Thanks for all your input much appreciated.
