Age old question, what does it do ?

Now before you say the classics dont have one, they do, well, they have 2 switches, one for the reverse lights, other for, neautral switch, apparantly .

But what does it do on a classic, they have no clutch pedal safety switches and i also read the neautral switch stops the starter operating if in gear. well, i can start my WRX in gear, does that mean the switch is faulty ?

Ones a neutral position switch. And ones a reverse light switch.

What is the question?

 

The question is, on a classic, what is the function of a neutral Position switch, what does it do, if you unplug it, nothing changes, car drives the same, so my question is , what does it do ?

 

Like any Subaru Neutral Position switch (Classic, Newage 5MT or 6MT) it's linked into the Fuel Injection System part of the ECU and is used mainly for making adjustments at idle (when car is usually in neutral)

Interesting and nice info Don Clark.
My data shows the cars ignition to be @10* BTDC on start up but I'm pretty sure my NPS has been disconnected,so there will never be any compensation on startup.
My car is a GC8 but had a 6 speed gearbox conversion.
Would this mean there would be no way to connect my NPS from the 6 speed to my ECU or would a 5 speed NPS work on a 6 speed box?

 

@TheRig the starter lock out is purely a JDM clutch switch thing and nothing to do with the NPS

as above its use is mainly for idle and simply so the car understands when its moving in gear.......

@ossett2k2 you simply use the correct gearbox loom to suit your CHASSIS and it will plug into the 6spd sensors

 

Thanks @ @AS Performance I will look into sorting a loom(if there's not one there) I have seen a few plugs on the box when I've been under the car,one was a bigish grey plug which was disconnected.
I'm not even sure what gearbox I have to be honest,the long sticker is missing and just a short 6 digit(from memory) sticker on there,I'm pretty sure it's a JDM 6 speed as the ratios are very short.
Would you know if the sensors and loom are the same for all 6 speed boxes,JDM & UK,bug & blob etc?

 

as previously stated it the 5spd gearbox loom to suit your CHASSIS not the 6spd gearbox loom.......

So unless my loom has been removed then I should be able to plug my existing loom straight into the 6 speed box.

 

Thats auto box

 

So on a manual car it tells the ecu that the car is out of gear and so not being driven in gear.

 

Is the Nps switch the reason why when rolling in neutral the engine revs rise ??
