I am replacing the cambelt on my 04 wrx, i have got the new belt over the drivers side pulleys and now lining up passenger side. I have read that when turning the camshafts to get pulley marks to line up you turn the top pulley clockwise and bottom pulley anti clockwise
to get the marks in line i will need to rotate the top pulley nearly a full turn clockwise, does this look right? it seems a long way to rotate it, or could i just turn it 1/8 a turn anti clockwise to get the two marks in line.

Just turn it any way, then lightly (read lightly, not spactardidly) grip accross the two pulleys with small vice grips, this will hold them in place.
Slip belt on, job done
Tdc?! The Impreza times up with Pistons half up and down.
Thats what i ment as there is a marker for tdc as well as the timing marking, the amount of folk ive seen trying to time up with the tdc as its confusing the 2 marks for some people.
