Did you do a volume test to ensure that the compression ratio would be right?

It's VITAL for turbo engines. If you get it wrong it will det itself to death.

Hi alcazar no I didn't I contacted a reputable tuner in the subaru industry and he advised me that 1.6mm headgasket would be fine

Can't you set rev limit to light the CEL?
Maybe yours is set to 4k?

It can rev past 4000rpm tho that's just when the CEL comes on as I thought it may be in safe mode or something

Apexi doesn't retain the oem fault codes so wouldn't have thought the CEL means there is a fault?
I ment shift light not rev limit.
Do you have the hand commander?

Just having a quick look at apexi on an Impreza.
The mapper usually sets the CEL to come on it its detting,so sounds like you have a problem, running very lean or timing well out.
Have you double checked timing marks all line up?

No I don't have the hand controller. I have checked the timing over and over again it's spot on and every tooth from 1 Mark to the next is absolutely spot on

The CEL can also mean the injectors are maxing out,but as you don't have the hand commander then you can't check the duty.

Do you have an AFR gauge or knock detector? or even some dettcans so you can see if it is detting?

Power fc will flash the cel if it detects det, a solid light could be where the rev limit is set or any of the other parameters outside of their normal working range

There 440 injectors and they were fine before I changed the block. No I don't have afr or det cans

It's not a solid cel only flashing when you rev beyond 4000rpm by this time I backed of after confirming it was at 4000rpm and beyond

Sounds like it could be detting then.
If you don't have a cable and software or the commander then you can't really see what's going on,best getting a mapper to take a look I would say.

A mapper will be able to tell you if its detting,a good mapper should be able to tell you why it's detting.
DIY detcans are easy and cheap to make, some ear defenders, some lengths of rubber pipe/tubeing and a length of copper pipe.

What block did you fit? Fresh rebuild? What heads?

Detcans when built, you fix the copper end on the block close to the knock sensor, put the ear defenders on and listen for det(engine knock/pinking)
Sounds a little like frying bacon noise.

I take it your car is a version 5 classic then?

No it's a v4 classic mate and If I were to make my own detcans still no good to me as like you said a good good mapper will tell me the problem to rectify I'm no mapper so it's like playing darts in the dark

You're best off triple checking this but,I came across some info on the thread I've linked.
V5 heads are phase 2 so would need a 0.6mm head gasket not 1.2mm when fitting to a v1 block.
Like I say,I'm no engine builder so might be way off the mark so best checking the info is correct.

I'm using a 1.6mm gaskets mate I'll have a flick through that now

Ok I've just re read that and it does say 1.6mm so looks like you're ok,sorry about that mate.

Also yes you are right, the detcans will only tell you that you have knock and not where the fault is.
