Default Where is the oil going??

Appreciate anyone who takes the time to read this and educate me.

I've had my Wrx Hawkeye for 3 years, trouble free. I had the clutch changed last year and not long after a knocking starts so I take it back to the guy. He listens and says it's coming from the engine... he recommended me to his buddies who build drag race classic Imprezas and run a machine shop grinding heads and what not.
They listen to it for a few minutes and say it sounds like it's coming from the variable valve timing units and that can be due to a lack of oil so we check the oil and low and behold it's low. So they've given me Millers motorsport oil and in it goes.... knocking goes away immediately. There was no oil warning light or anything.
So this is a few months ago so I check the oil today and it's low again.... really low. Where's it all going? The car runs like a dream, doesn't smoke, very reliable very fast, no knocking. I'm **** scared of Big end failure. I dunno what to do. I'm considering fitting a new oil pump as I've heard these can fail but really I'm a total leyman or whatever u call it, know very little. I was planning to eek a few more horses out the engine but I'm scared to do it while I keep losing/burning this much oil? Ivesy.

Must be losing it via a leak or burning it.

My oil usage has stopped since I fitted a 3 port air oil separator with return to sump.

Thanks for the feedback. So I shouldn't worry too much. Just keep topping up or get a 3 port oil separator. I was going to attempt to go to 320 horses. Has anyone got any advice on that or should I start a new thread? I read that a fMIC, uprated air filter/exhaust and a re-map should do it.

Probably. Either fit a sports cat, or keep your old cats.

not at all, just having a poke at the old 2.5 - as above keep an eye on your oil levels and if the usage starts to increase then it's time for pistons but you should be checking on a very regular basis as if it starts to go then you'll go from full to negative oil in no time.

Yeah, sorry, been doing something proper instead of wasting my time on here.

the chocolate comment was because 2.5's have a habit of melting pistons. I thought you knew that, or I'd have explained it.;(

Good going Cap. Have you ever had your piston rings done?

So do sti's have forged pistons? Is that an upgrade worth doing to a wrx if you're taking it apart?

Problem is 2.5's have a nasty habit of head gaskets going and ring lands breaking. they don't all do, but a pretty high number do. wrx or sti makes no difference, subaru stopped doing proper forged pistons to save money.

When it comes to oil use it really depends how much, subaru say 1L per 1000 miles is the point of concern. having to top it up now and again isn't a massive concern unless it's loosing alot, like all subarus you need to make sure you are regularly checking the oil level.

Don't forget the oil pick pipe which can fracture and destroy the bottom end too

Removal of the sump, that wont be causing oil consumption though just loses oil pressure if it cracks hence always nice to have a oil pressure/temp gauge on them
