If your starting it and then checking the oil will be circulated around the engine, try leaving the dipstick out over night and then check first thing in the morning.

Needs to be totally level, to get the best reading I removed the dipstick and leave it out for a good few min(allows oil to drain from tube) any incline usually throws a terrible reading.

Just make sure its on a flat surface, take dipstick out and leave car for a while so oil goes back into sump then check, if your not sure why dont you do an oil change then you know you know how much is in there and monitor going forward.

I have a similar problem. I just can't seem to get an accurate reading as the bottom of the dipstick is just covered in oil. On my previous cars it was very easy to assess the level but its proving frustrating with my Scooby!

Best doing it cold, the dipstick is strange to read sometimes and i find sometimes one side of it has the oil level, as said take it out and leave it a bit as dipping it straight away drags all the oil up the tube.
