Default Low compression

Hi guys!

SO I am looking at buying an impreza classic turbo 2000. Always wanted one and a sub 100k one has come up which has my initials on the number plate, seems great!

Only it says it is £1600 instead of £3500 due to "engine low compression"

what exactly is this and what is the cure? is it simple and or inexpensive?

The description says the following so it seems to have been looked after...

£ 1695 Low Price Due to Engine Low on Compression Was £ 3695

1999, Subaru Impreza 2.0 Turbo 2000 AWD, Saloon, Manual, MOT May 2016, 3 Owner, 84k, 15 Service Stamps in Service Book + Invoices & Book Pack, Last Serviced at 66k, Engine Removed to carry out Head Skim with New Cylinder Heads with new Gaskets/Cambelt/Thermostat/Radiator/Oil/Filter at 64k in Aug 2012 buy Syntrack Automotive Performance Specialist, Lots of Service Invoices & Paperwork, The majority of the Servicing has be carried out buy Performance Specialists, £ 2100 Spent in the last year, New High Tension Lead Set at 79k, New Reconditioned ABS Pump at 82k, New Filler Pipe at 79k, New Front Clipers in 2010 at Approx 54k, Sports Back Box, PAS, ABS, Alloys, Air Con, Electric Window/Mirrors/Locking, CD-Player, New Remote Locking Fob, 2 Remote Central Locking Fobs & Keys with Factory Immobilizer Code Numbers, Alarm & Immobilizer, Seat & Steering Wheel Height Adjust, Very Well Looked After Impreza, Spectacular Condition & Stunning Drive. The only mod is the Back Exhaust

SO I am wondering how it is a "stunning drive" if it has low compression...low enough to reduce the price of the car by 50%.

I would need to drive it home ~200 miles.

I live ~30 miles from Alan Jeffery which is an Impreza Specialist in Plymouth so not too concerned about that if it is a cheap fix?

Thanks!

A classic at 1600 quid that requires engine work seems a bit strong, £3695 is way off for a UK classic.

Will need an engine rebuild. Get a quote from Alan Jeffrey's then haggle on the price if you are still interested.

What exactly will need rebuilding? Would it be just the pistons? I assume (and a big assumption) that a piston is dead allowing air to leak out when it should be airtight?

Won't know until you open the engine up.

I would suggest doing a leak down test instead of a compression test as that will tell u exactly what is wrong. Do a search on here or Google it to see how to do and how to diagnose the results. :-)

Iv seen this car for sale and it looks a stunning example

As said though, tis a minefield. Be easiest to just do a short block swap!

Biggest problem is unknown amount of damage. Could need a whole new engine inc block and heads which for a pucker rebuild will not be cheap.

Untill damage is known hard to price up.

Another option is a drop in second hand engine, but there's never any gaurenty with em
