Default I've just made a crazy mistake :(

Hello, I have wrx 05 and I was starting to take the turbo off the intercooler is off and I pulled out the transmission fluid dipstick as I undone the heat shield one of the bolts went down the transmission dipstick hole

I went to drain the gearbox oil but yep torx70 needed I have a 60 which I began to try but soon slipped out and sheered a little.

My question is where does the dipstick go to is it an isolated area as at a guess it goes to the bottom away from any of the mechanics of the box?

I'm lost on what to do

My money would be on trying to fish around for the bolt with a magnet on the end of a coat hanger or garden wire. You'll want to make sure it's very solidly attached, obviously. The process might actually be aided by putting a small amount of oil back into the box.

To answer your question though, no way in hell I'd risk turning that transmission over with a foreign object buried at the bottom of it somewhere. It will be free to float around and get caught up in the moving parts, guaranteed.

An identical thing happened to me whilst refitting a turbo. A friend started to refit the heat shield and a small bolt fell into the dipstick tube. I drained the oil and nothing came out so I went and bought a small headed telescopic bendy magnet and spent about 40 minutes rummaging around, I was about to give up when I heard the magnet tag something, I was relieved to see the little m6 bolt on the end. I think someone was looking down on me that day and consider myself very lucky.

If the worse case is I can't find it am I okay pushing the car to the recovery truck as its round back of my house and only car width can get up then have it transported to a garage as I'm guessing the box will have to come off etc I'll obv not start the car.

I've ordered a 12 inch flexi magnetic pick up tool, but at a guess it will just be sticking to everything it goes near. So gutted words can't be found at the moment

That's some seriously bad luck, I think the flexi magnet idea will be your best bet, not much more you can do really, unless taking everything apart.
Hope you get this sorted.

I must add, I went in through the drain plug not down the dipstick tube.

It sure is couldn't believe my eyes and luck is far from on my side, I'll keep you guys posted tho and welcome any ideas, think it will be box out and if so I'm framing the nut which will prob cost me over £200-£300 to have the box out and put back in

Thanks yeah thought that as with luck I'm having I'd end up getting the magnet stuck in the fill hole

Tough lesson learnt, but this is why you always cover the ends of pipes etc when removing things

Sorry to hear pal but I guess you could take this opportunity to have a new clutch put in while the box is off? But I do pray you can take it out with a magnet as described before with patients take your time

Id be inclined to go through the dip stick tube to try and fish it out, i reckon itll be a lot easier to get at it this way and you may find it wedged halfway down the tube. If not its going to be pretty much directly below it anyway as it wouldnt of rolled far.

I've got a 12inch flexi magnet on its way I'll be trying both with all fingers crossed. If the box has to come off I'll upgrade the clutch as I'm keeping the car
