Default Is this oil ok?

I've just done an oil change on my 97 turbo 2000 and i put shell hellix hx7 10-40 in. Now when i picked it up from the garage where it has had all its previous services and general work the mechanic said it was smoking abit. He said this could be because the car has been sat for nearly 5 years or it might be because iv used synthetic oil instead of the normal oil they used to put in it. Now it was a bit smokey for the first 10 miles or so but it stopped smoking after that so im thinking it was just because it hasn't been run for a while. As for the oil im just thinking i might be better going back to semi-sinthetic or do i use 100%mineral oil? I think its always been run on semi so im inclined to swap to semi now. Im abit confused as the oil can says "synthetic technology " on it and doesn't say fully or semi???? What do you guys use on standard engine's?

Hi

HX7 10w-40 is fine to use, the smoke was probably due to the car being sat around for 5 years. The HX7 10w-40 is a semi-synthetic.

Cheers

With the advance in oil technology nobody would use a 100% mineral oil in a modern engine.
Shell HX7 is a perfectly good semi-synthetic.

Thanks for the help guys, im glad its a semi. I would have thought it would have been more clearly written on the can as to whether its semi or fully. Never mind at least i know now.

Cheers

David.

its a well used "scam" for profiteering oil companies.................

joe punter buys something for a high price presuming its better quality than what it is - allegedely obviously

same as not all synthetics are the same quality and are manufactured to a price regradless of what some "experts" would have you believe

Yes, just like most things, marketing nonsense affects oils. It would be nice if they all put things in straight wording on the labels, but they all do what they can to make the oil sound as good as it can, without overstepping the mark.
