Default Running to cool?

I have a late classic impreza uk turbo, totally standard.

The temperature gauge always sits just below half way.

I went for a long drive today and the weather is hot here in sunny Bristol.

I pulled in to buy a drink, when I re started the car I noticed the temperature gauge now only sits just above the bottom line??

Does anyone know what's going on ? When I leave the engine ideling the fan kicks in as normally and stops after 30 seconds or so.

Cheers

Faulty sender or gauge.

What are the coolant levels like when cold?

Just been out to check, the cars not 100% cold yet but the coolant resovour is full and the overflow bit (behind the passengers headlight) is fine.

Iv just started the engine and let it idel and the guage now appears to be working ? I.e it rose to it standard level just below half

Am I right in thinking I have a faulty sendor for the temp guage ? If so where is it located and anyone know a good place to buy one?

Cheers

It's not, it only starts reading when the engine temp gets to 60+.
Also bear in mind that, in normal driving, oil temperature lags water temperature by about 5 minutes.
