The paper work I got with my Scooby told me to use Shell Helix oil but Halfords dont sell it.
My local Subaru garage is about 1/2 a mile from the Halfords store so i went there and asked what oil they use (the same garage where i dought my scoob) and was told 10/40 Magnatec ??
So thats what i bought.
Dont know why it said "Subaru UK recomend Shell Helix plus" in my paper work ? guess they can buy Magnatec cheeper than Shell Helix these days ?

Silkolene Pro-S 10W/50(Around £30 for 5litres) is top quality oil & wouldn't trust anything else in my '02 WRX. Far better than the Mobil stuff which (IMHO)breaks down after a few k's and is slow to get moving round the engine when cold(Hence why they have the thinner 0w/ available!)

And NO rattles from the engine even with the abuse I give it...
1st 5mins keep under 3k after 5mins boooooooooooooost!!!!

mobil motorsport 15w50 i think is best suited to scoobs because
as you know the engine rattle a little bit on start up..

so this is ultimate protection.!!
but best drop down to 10w40 in the winter.

i had probs with mobil 15/50 so never again 4me
i supplied my own mobil 15/50 oil for a service and had a light tappin/knocking noise develope on start up for upto 5seconds duration then it would dissappear
eventually checked back with the dealer after 2wks of this and they suspected that the oil was sluggish when cold and starving a bearing
they drained the oil and filled it with castrol [i think?] free of charge[yes i said FREE]
didnt notice anythin at first cos engine was warm but a couple o days later i realized the noise had gone

still not sure that the mobil was at fault but am takin no more risks with it
now use millers or silkolene woteva is cheaper at service time and no more funny engine noises

just my tuppence worth

I bought my scooby with 76k on the clock... it had full subaru service history and on investigation (spoke to the dealer that serviced it) it had been run on the Shell Hellex semi-synthetic that most dealers put in... so as the engine was as sweet as a nut that is what I have continued to use... seems strange not using fully synthetic but with the oil issues I have stuck with what it has been fine on so far.

Now approaching 102k miles and <touch wood> no oil related problems... well no problems really <touch wood> again..

Cool

Slightly off topic, I use Shell helix in my Audi - top oil !
If you go to France you can buy it in the hypermarkets for £11 for 5ltrs !!!
Mobil 1 is also much cheaper, and again available in 5ltr cans.
