Hi All

My cambelt was replaced by the last owner last year only a few thousand miles ago. However looking at the invoice the part looked a bit cheap so I googled the part number and I think it is just the Contitech belt itself and not the kit with tensioners, idlers etc.

Is it wise to redo the cambelt at some point and do the other bits too or will it not be necessary? The car has 52k on the clock.

I just had my Evo 9 cambelt fitted , I just had the belt fitted as it only has done 11k from new

 

Sounds like the previous owner skimped on servicing, I would take the belt covers off and inspect the idlers/tensioner for any problems and replace if necessary.

 

I don't think he skimped on servicing. The last one was done at a merc dealer (no idea why) and totalled £1200! I think it is the merc dealer that decided to just replace the belt. Maybe they inspected it and thought it wasn't nessessary to replace the tensioner etc.

 

That's what happened on the evo they guy said no point in changing them.

Was done buy a evo specialist so I trusted them.

 

Ahh fair enough I'm sure the dealer would have picked up on it if they needed replacing. I'll probably do the cambelt again next year or the year after and do the tensioner, idlers and water pump at the same time.

Has anyone else just had the belt replaced without tensioners etc on a Subaru?

 

A Mercedes dealer are you serious, £1200 for a cheap belt and some oil ,filter etc and they would have checked everything else even though they Don't service Subarus!! If your happy with that then good luck!

 

It had the 2 front calipers sent away for a rebuild at the same time according to the invoice which was the biggest cost. I'm not happy with it, which is why I am going to redo the belt in the near future, just seems a waste of money to redo the belt so soon as it just had one :/

I plan on doing a proper service myself, oil, filters, gearbox and diff oil fuel filter, proper Subaru spec coolant, brake fluid, plugs, the works.

 

the Timing Belt service on a Subaru is technically a belt replacement only with all tensioners replaced on an inspection basis - if everything is good to go then happy days

however belt kits are so cost effective these days that its not a major issue price wise to replace the whole kit.........

Ahh thanks for the clarification AS performance. As long as its not something that HAS to be replaced and hasn't I'm happy to leave it till next year

I have seen your kits already and plan on getting one from you along with a water pump when the time comes

 

Had my car 10 yr now and changed cambelt on 5 yr point everything ok so just the belt.Then had cambelt done last yr and tensioner inspected and still good.So as AS Performance advised this is a inspection only and very few cases for the need to change the pump at the same time.

 

As above, I had just the belt done and not the full kit. The tensioner rarely goes without fair warning, so as Alyn says it's usually inspect and replace if necessary. Having said that if you're uneasy get the kit off Alyn and get it done.
