oil smell in car - gasket leak?
I have noticed an oil smell in the car when the engine is warm and revved, looking under the bonnet I can see what looks to be an oil leak from one of the gaskets. From the photos can you tell me which gasket this might be and also would it be a big job for a subaru friendly garage to fix, it's way beyond my capabilities.

rocker cover gaskets bud, a well known issue on subarus. the drivers side usually go,s as the heat from the turbo at that side makes the rubber go hard and brittle then it starts to weep onto the exhaust manifold underneath then you get the smell through the heaters. i just had both sides done for 340 quid as both had gone on mine. i also had a cracked half moon seal on the drivers side, these are camshaft seals and are half moon shaped bits of plastic or bakelite that sit in the heads. get genuine ones whatever you do as i found out the hard way after 3 attempts to get them right. if buying yourself the full kit should have the gasket and 8 bolt eyelets and 2 spark plug seals. you can buy the half moons if you need them but they can be cleaned and reused as long as they are not damaged.

Cheers Yabadoo, I did wonder if it may be the rocker gasket. It only seems to be on the drivers side and that makes sense now you mention it's the heat from the turbo that causes the failure. I'll get it booked in with my usual Subaru specialist.
