Any impreza for 3k or under is gonna be a gamble, but make sure you get a jap model as its likely to be in better condition and a higher spec than the UK stuff.

Think most you will get for 3k is a 2000 turbo v5, all the sti's v5 and v6 go for silly money.

There's plenty of nice wrx imports still knocking around with low miles. You could get one and give it a facelift

3-4k is not a bad budget, and you should be able to get what you want, problem is it's a waiting game, nice cars are limited and as such they tend to go very quickly when they come up.

This would be worth a look if you can do a deal with the guy, nice looking late car and the limited edition RA too boot :-)

Or, if you can compromise and look at an earlier a car, you could pick up a very clean JDM WRX like this which is up for less than your budget

In terms of closed deck/open deck blocks, forget it, unless your chasing big power it really doesnt make any odds and I wouldnt buy a car just because its cdb etc.

If you look after them properly the engines are tough old things generally, my old UK car had over 100k with no engine work and the original clutch, and was still running great! Likewise my current RA has over 120,000 on the clock yet has never had the engine opened up and is still going strong..
