Default Which heads and cams to go for?

As the title, decided I'm going to do a self build 2.1 stroker, for my Blob WRX but will eventually drop the engine in my Type R in a few years, not really sure about avcs at the moment but anything is possible as I'm only at the planing stage.

So what I want to know is what would be reasonable price wise and a good combination of heads and cams / valve train etc as well as being a straight fit for the Blob and easy to convert to suit the V3 Type R later.

Your existing heads with some slightly more lumpy cams?

What sort of power do you want?

Mid 400's but building the engine to take 500 ish maybe a bit more, just need to do some research and pricing, I'm not in a rush but I would like to build the engine up complete with heads then just swap over so the car is only down for a couple of days while I take out and refit.

Just use avcs heads but without wiring in the avcs so the system stays closed

I'm really not prepared to spunk £12/1300 on a second hand engine with 50K + and several un-known owners, when for £2k ish I can build my own fresh 2.1L, I'm not frightened about engine building and I'm also in no rush, this is going to be done over the next year as and when parts pop up at the right money, I might even let someone else build it up for me or buy a built bottom end, It's just a wait and see at the moment.

Shrek, I have a V7 manifold, ECU and loom as I was going to go down that route, just need the loom from JT and may or may not still do avcs all depends again on what pops up.

Avcs heads with standard cams but with one piece supertech valves for peace of mind, especially if you're doing the work yourself

Your main pain with this is the V3 have the early stud pattern for the inlet, it's not easy to convert. I would run either avcs heads or V5/6 sti heads, but get a pair of V3/4 sti heads ready and swap them over to go in the GC8. It keeps things original and only a few hours work + the cost of a pair of headgaskets and cam covers/backplates.
If you need a 2.1 kit give me a shout.

Very good point regarding the inlet pattern, ditch this is the option i would go with as it makes life a lot easier. Some refreshed v3/4 sti head with a decent set of valves and you're good to go

Hi Ditch

I would go with UK STI AVCS and if you can find good JDM Big port AVCS then I would go without the doubts with them and one advice, please check them for cracks, they're usually are prone to crack around the spark plugs

If you are looking for 450-500bhp then I would go with AVCS without the doubts, they're not expensive and I wouldn't do anything on the valves or springs, they should be OK if you are not looking run beyond 2.0bar

Single valves are great, but this this will bring price of the heads to another level(when you are doing valves and not doing springs and retainers then this is waste of time and this will cost again up to £600-£800 just for parts),depends on the budget,we run JDM WRX heads with standard valves and spring at 490bhp and we run NOS too without the issue and they shouldn't be issue too on yours

Again this depends on the for what are you looking and what power and what turbo are you thinking to run

Hope this help

Thanks,Jura
