Default Oil Light Flashing Up Hot Engine Starts

Hi all,

Got a problem with my WRX at the minute and it only seems to happen when the engine is up to full temp and is switched off and back on.

For example I pull up switch the engine off, minutes later keys back in to ignition all lights cone on and go out as they should turn the key to start the engine all lights go out as the engine starts then the oil light flashes on very briefly then goes out again.

Since this has been happening the light sometimes literally flashes on and other times it could be on for about 1 second. I check the oil level weekly and the oil + filter were changed about 4k ago.

This does not happen every single time though.....

Also seem to have a bad cold engine tapping issue which taps faster as the engine revs rise until around 3k where it goes....can this be related?

UPDATE: PLEASE READ MY BELOW POST FOR MORE UP TO DATE INFO.

Needs checking ASAP really. Could be a cheap fix and a new pressure sensor, or it could be low oil pressure and an engine about to expire.

Thanks for the input guys, I have found it doesnt flash up if you start it straight away like I explained above but if you leave it about 15-20 minutes switched off it usually flashes up but it doesn't always that is whats confusing. I managed to get a video:

I would struggle leaving it at a garage for a few days due to needing it for work and as said doesn't happen every single time so they may note even see the issue. Is there anything on the drive I can do to find out what it may be?

Please get your oil pressure checked ASAP.
It might be a faulty oil pressure switch or incorrect oil grade as mentioned above or :
PRV in the oil pump sticking open in the relief position.
Oil pump backing plate screws loose which bleeds off vital oil pressure.
Excessive clearances on the big end and main bearings.

Hope it is something simple for you though.

Mick

Hi guys,

Thank you for all the help I will get it booked back in with the specialist asap! The oil is 5w30 fully synth and this was done along with genuine filter not long ago by my specialist Sheffield Subaru Service. Car has been owned by a Subaru dealer before me and I have documents showing a service every 6/7k.

Thanks Tom
