Default gearbox and diff oil advice

helo
haven't had my Subaru long but I no my gearbox and diff are both due for a oil change. any advice on

How often should the oil be changed on both ?
Witch oil to get for the gearbox and differential and how much will I need?
How do I no when the diff is full do I fill till it spills ?
and is it as easy as a oil change, meaning is it just drain the oil then top back no bleeding involved etc.. ?

its a 93wrx running around 340bhp If that effects the oil I need..

thanks for any help.

I use castrol Universal 75w-90 in both diff and gearbox in my classic UK. Just fill diff until it runs out filler hole. Gearbox has dipstick

In the rear diff there are two drain plugs. You need to remove both to drain oil (I think that you use 1/2" drive from a socket set from my recollection). You're meant to replace the crush washers each time (they're a bit like sump drain plug washers but I don't think that they're the same size). To refill, you replace lower plug and then fill until oil reaches level of upper plug (one is higher than other). I think that it only takes about half a litre or so.

The diff drain screws can be extremely stubborn so you might have to get creative to loosen them.

It's good to remove filling nut/plug first (just to make sure you can refill)

Hi

You need a 75w-90 for the gearbox and diff.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-...ion-fluid.aspx

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Red Line 75w-90NS and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Universal/Universal Plus, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives. The Fuchs Syn 5, Millers CRX, Redline 75w-90 GL5, Motul Gear 300 and Gulf Competition are ideal for the diff. The Fuchs Sintopoid, Castrol Syntrax Longlife, Millers TRX, Motul Motylgear, Mobil SHC and Amsoil FGR are also good choices.

Cheers

Tim

5 litres is enough for box and diff. Ive always overfilled the box to protect 3rd. it takes 4 litres.
this is semi syth but it IS the stuff you want. the Subaru boxes love it. trust me.

only reason I say is cos the synchros are what you need to worry about, not the brand of the oil. the Castrol oil I quoted has a very good track record on this site.

B and Q sells this surprisingly. There's a motoring section beside the hand tools section. I'm sure that I've got it there before.

I try not to go there. I got some oil from there 4L castrole edge £53 + 1L can't remember the price. then after I did my oil change I seen the oil in asda 4L £36 + 1L £9,99, and the staff in Halford dnt no carp about cars. I would always advice not to go there unless you have no choice. Thanks for the reply tho
