Default Healthy engine

Just been getting some quotes on booking the classic in for some paint, but before I spend the money I wanted to check the engine was good and strong, is a compression test the best method for checking for possible issues. I know the best method would be to strip the engine and inspect. What numbers should I expect for a healthly engine. Many thanks
