Are you a yanker....
or do you use your opposable thumb to press the button when you lift the handbrake?
I'm sorry but it really irritates me when people glide up to a parking space and yank up the handbrake rather than pulling it up "properly".
Is it just me?

My car manual actually states to not use the thumb when deplying the HB
i do though, as i'm usually going about 45 at the time and dont want it to lock out fully, just enough to envoke some rear end action (stop it!!!) !!! lol

The button is there to enable you to release the handbrake...you should never use the button when applying it because when you drop the hand brake you can damage the teeth in the mechanism.
Handbrakes are designed to be applied without depressing the button, hope that gives appropriate advice to optimise peoples yanking

If you use your thumb to put the handbrake "on" then you can set it on the edge of a tooth, this can then jam the button in. Which can lead to the failure of the handbrake, resulting in your pride and joy careering down a road causing damage and potentially death.
The clicking is your audible sound that the ratchet is actually working.
Do you also use your thumb on a ratchet spanner when working on your car as the noise is unbearable??
So unless you yank, your a danger!!

The teeth wear out as with any part on a car aren`t made to last forever, and they are sprung anyways so don`t cause much damage.
Main thing people should do is lift the handbrake as they press the button to release the brake, just pressing the button and lowering causes the most damage of any action. As the handbrake cable causes pressure on the teeth, which is the only time there is pressure directly on the mechanism. As its either off, or your hand takes the pressure.
